Unsure If a Chinchilla Is The Pet For You?  Try It Out For A Week!

Want to see what it would be like to have a chinchilla as a pet?  Unsure if you might be allergic?  Try our "trial run" program.  In this program, you get to take home a chinchilla, complete with cage and all needed supplies, for a week.  To ensure that no one takes off with our chinchillas / cages / supplies, we ask that you put down a deposit equal to the cost of the chinchilla, cage, and supplies.  We also require a signed form, detailing that you do not own, and that you will return, the chinchilla / cage / supplies, or will forfeit your deposit.  To ensure everyone is being truthful, we make a copy of your driver's license at your appointment.

If you do not decide to adopt the chinchilla, your deposit is returned / refunded, when our chinchilla / cage / supplies are returned.  There is NO actual fee to do this, just the deposit to ensure that we either get our stuff back, or are compensated for it.  If you do decide to adopt, the deposit can be applied to the chinchilla adoption fee and anything else you may want to purchase.  If your deposit is a larger amount than what you end up purchasing, we will refund you the difference.  If you would like to participate in this program, please let us know.

Chinchilla (and Other Critter) Listings!

5.5 Month Old Standard Grey Male Chinchilla

We have a standard grey male chinchilla who’s looking for his new home. He came to NWI not long ago and he is now ready to go to his new home! We have down that he was born on 8/16/2018, which makes him just now 5.5 months old. Great time to take him home.

This male’s color is called standard grey, which means he is grey over most of his body, except for his belly, which is white.

Oh those little ears and that cute face and OMG he is so cute!! I want to squeeze him 24/7 and you will too! He’s a cutie with some bounce to his step and can take a little effort to scoop him up, but once you do, it is totally worth the effort! He is a super sweet boy and does well with being handled and petted. Just the cutest thing ever! We just love him. Super sweet boy, and did we mention, super cute? Doesn’t bite.

He would make a great “first chinchilla” for someone who’s never had one before.

This chinchilla is currently caged alone, and we don’t know how he does with others. However, if you interested in pairing him up with your, or one of our, chinchillas, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

The adoption fee for this standard grey male chinchilla is $135

5 Month Old White Mosaic Female Chinchilla

We have a mosaic female chinchilla who’s looking for her new home. She came to NWI just a bit ago, and is now ready to leave and go to a family of her own. She was born 9/1/18, so she’s just now 5 months old. Perfect time to bring her home!

Her color is called mosaic, which is an overall white color. She is mostly white with some silvery shading on her face and at the base of her tail. Super cute!

She is a very cute girl that is relatively easy to scoop up into your arms. She does well with being handled and petted and she sits pretty nicely in your arms to be petted. She’s an absolute doll, we just love her. Very calm and very nice. Doesn’t bite.

She would make a great “first chinchilla” for someone who’s never had one before.

This chinchilla is currently caged alone. However, if you interested in pairing her up with your, or one of our, chinchillas, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

The adoption fee for this mosaic female chinchilla is $200

6.5 Month Old Medium Ebony Male Chinchilla

We have a medium ebony male chinchilla who’s looking for a home. He came to NWI not long ago, and we have that he was born on 7/24/18, which makes him 6.5 months old. Great time to take him home!

This male is a light / medium ebony. This means that he is a charcoal grey color all over his body, including his belly. He is darker on his back, and lightens up on his side. Very pretty color gradient.

What a sweet little guy! Curious boy and relatively easy to pick up. He does have some bouncy moments here and there. He does like to explore and check out everything around him, but definitely will chill with you for short periods of time as well. Sweet boy, doesn’t bite.

He would make a great “first chinchilla” for someone who’s never had one before, as long as they understand that he can be a bit more on the active side.

This chinchilla is currently caged alone. However, if you interested in pairing him up with your, or one of our, chinchillas, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

The adoption fee for this medium ebony male chinchilla is $150

3 Year Old Standard Grey Male Chinchilla -- slightly special needs -- "Lima Bean"

We have a standard grey male chinchilla that is looking for his new home. He came to NWI a bit ago, and we have that he was born around November 2015, which makes him right about 3 years old. His name is Lima Bean.

Lima Bean’s color is called standard grey, which is the classic color in chinchillas – a greyish color over his back, with a white belly.

Lima Bean’s owner originally had Lima Bean (and another chin) listed as a courtesy listing with us, but unfortunately was unable to keep them any longer due to her husband wanting to travel more and the chinchillas tying them down. Here’s what she had to say about him (when we had him as a courtesy listing):

“Lima Bean is a male neutered chinchilla who is 3 years old. He is a very sweet boy but, shy. The more time you spend with him, the more outgoing he becomes! He absolutely loves his wheel and is not shy about showing off his running skills!! Lol! He was not always the happy boy he is now. I adopted him as a baby from pet smart because they couldn't sell him due to trauma to his upper jaw. Both of his front teeth had fallen out. He was very skinny and malnourished because it was very hard for him to eat. I immediately took him to my exotic vet in Indy. Long story short she extracted his bottom teeth so he could eat easier. He does get quite a mixture of food and treats because over time I've found what he will and can eat. Oh and he's not spoiled.....just loved! ;) he's very small due to his traumatic beginning but, dynamite comes in small packages!! I don't know if he ever sleeps!! I've never caught him anyway, and that's all day long!! He likes his bath and likes scratches and rubs after you let him warm up to you.

Of course, we’ve now spent time with Lima Bean as well, and have some info to add to this. Lima Bean isn’t a huge fan of being picked up and handled. He can be handled and petted, but this just isn’t his goal in life. He will bark and talk at you when you go to pick him up, though he doesn’t bite – he can’t – no front teeth. So you have no need to worry about being bitten, the most he can do is gum you to death (though in reality, he doesn’t even do that). If you ignore the barking and pick him up, he will chill with you for a short period of time, but he is a very on-the-go chinchilla, like his owner said… I’m not sure if he sleeps either! He wants to check everything out and would probably be a hoot at playtime! He will come with some of his things, including a special hideaway that he enjoys and a water bottle. Both of these are plastic… but that’s ok… because he can’t chew!

Despite what his previous owner said about finding the perfect mix of food to feed him due to what he would and wouldn’t eat… we do have him now eating regular pellets (which is actually what took so long for him to be ready to go). Of course he’d rather eat his treat mix, but he did eventually switch over to regular Tradition pellets, which is much healthier for him, and we’re sure will keep him alive much longer as opposed to all the snacks he was getting. He had them trained quite well! So no unusual dietary needs for this guy, he eats regular pellets and hay (which he chews up with his molars).

I should mention… due to the fact he has no front teeth… he does not need chew toys and his cage can have alllllllll the plastic you want… cause he can’t chew it.

Lima Bean would be a great chinchilla for someone who’s never had one before, provided they understand that he is a bit more on the active side.

The adoption fee for Lima Bean (and his stuff) is $75

3.5 Year Old White Mosaic Male Chinchilla

We have a mosaic male chinchilla that is looking for his new home. He came to NWI a bit ago, and now he is ready to find a home of his own. We have down that he was born 7/14/2015, which makes him just now 3.5 years old.

This male’s color is called mosaic, which is basically a white chinchilla with greyish markings. As you can see from his pictures, he is mostly white with just a tad bit of shading on both sides of his face.

He is super super cute, right? Gotta let that cuteness win you over, because he can be a challenge to catch sometimes! He is a bit bouncy, but would likely be a joy at playtime, and would highly amuse you with his antics! Once you’re holding him, he does settle down considerably and does well with being handled and petted… just gotta catch him first! Though he sits really nicely to be petted, so it is totally worth it! Very sweet boy, doesn’t bite.

This chinchilla would make a great “first chinchilla” for someone who’s never had one, provided they understand that he is a bit more on the active side, at least as far as initially catching him.

This chinchilla is currently alone, and we do not know how he does with other chinchillas. If you are curious as to whether he might get along with your, or one of our, chinchillas, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

The adoption fee for this white mosaic male chinchilla is $150

2.5 Year Old Standard Grey Male Chinchilla -- "Rocky"

We have a standard grey male chinchilla that is looking for his new home. He came to NWI a bit ago, and we have that he was born around May 2016, which makes him right about 2.5 years old. His name is Rocky.

Rocky’s color is called standard grey, which is the classic color in chinchillas – a greyish color over his back, with a white belly.

Rocky came to us with a few other chinchillas when a small breeder decided to stop breeding, and needed a place for their last few chins (that they were unable to sell?) to go. We took them in, and Rocky is the first of the bunch to be available and ready to find his new home.

Rocky is a sweet chinchilla. He can be a little hesitant at first to check you out, but he soon warms up and becomes very curious and very outgoing. Once he knows you, you’ll find he’s always the first one at the front of the cage to greet you. Rocky occasionally likes being scratched behind his ears. He’ll be your best buddy! Super sweet and playful, but still relatively easy to scoop up into your arms. He does well with being held and petted and doesn’t bite.

Rocky would be a great chinchilla for someone who’s never had one before.

The adoption fee for Rocky is $75

3 Year Old Hetero Beige Male Chinchilla -- "Sumo"

Sumo has a sponsor!  Who-hoo!!  Joann P wanted to sponsor what she called "the unhappiest chin" for one month, until 2/26/19!  What a lucky boy!  If you're curious about or interested in sponsoring a chinchilla, contact us for more info!

We have a hetero beige male chinchilla that is looking for his new home. He came to NWI a bit ago, and we have that he was born around October 2015, which makes him right about 3 years old. His name is Sumo.

Sumo’s color is called hetero beige, which is a dark beigeish color over his back, with a white belly.

Sumo came to us with another chinchilla when their home was unable to keep them. Unfortunately, the two chins didn’t get along very well, and the move to the rescue didn’t help that, to the point where the other chinchilla attacked Sumo. Sumo had a long healing process to get back to being well enough to leave, but he’s there now and is now ready to find a home of his own! However, due to this traumatic experience, we would not recommend trying to pair Sumo with another chinchilla at any point in time.

Since Sumo has been separated from his ex-cagemate, he has found his voice. He loves to bark! Why does he bark? Your guess is as good as ours! He has been dubbed “the unhappiest chin at the rescue” – he just loves to bark. Whether you are walking past the cage – he barks – feeding him – he barks – cleaning the cage – he barks – breathing too close to his cage – he barks – he just loves to bark! No worries though, he’s all bark and no bite, he has never bitten anyone!

Sumo isn’t a huge fan of being picked up and he will run from you if you reach for him, but he is curious and if you’re patient with him and take things slow, he will eventually come up to the front of the cage. Once you pick him up and have him in your arms, he’s actually relatively calm. He does pretty well with being handled and petted (once you catch him). Very sweet chin.

Sumo would be a great chinchilla for someone who’s never had one before, provided they can be patient with him.

The adoption fee for Sumo is $100

3 Year Old Standard Grey Male Chinchilla -- "Doc"

We have a standard grey male chinchilla that is looking for his new home. He came to NWI a bit ago, and we have that he was born around October 2015, which makes him right about 3 years old. His name is Doc.

Doc’s color is called standard grey, which is the classic color in chinchillas – a greyish color over his back, with a white belly.

Doc came to us with another chinchilla when their home was unable to keep them. Unfortunately, the two chins didn’t get along very well, and the move to the rescue didn’t help that, to the point where Doc attacked his cagemate. The two have now been separated, and both are doing well on their own, so both are being adopted out separately. Due to Doc’s behavior with his cagemate, we do not recommend that he ever be paired with another chinchilla. However, he is GREAT with humans!

Something that is super awesome about Doc is that he will actually let you pet him! He’s a very social boy and we’re sure he would love playtime. He comes right up to the front of the cage to greet you and he might even hop onto your hand. Doc is a fun furball to watch… sometimes he will climb the walls, sometimes he will dig in his shavings (maybe he thinks it’s dust?), who knows! Always something new with this guy. He’s definitely an active boy, though he’s not super difficult to pick up. He’s never going to be your teddy bear cuddlebuddy, but he will tolerate being handled, but what he’d really like is to play jungle gym with you! He’d just be on cloud 9! Super sweet guy, loving the bachelor life, and loving pets. We even have a video of him getting petted! So many chins just run away, but he’s just nice and chill, and he was even the favorite of one of our volunteers! Doc doesn’t bite.

Doc would be a great chinchilla for someone who’s never had one before, provided they understand that he is a bit more on the active side.

The adoption fee for Doc is $75

6.5 Month White Mosaic Male Chinchilla

We have a mosaic male chinchilla that is looking for his new home. This little guy came to NWI a bit ago, and is now ready for his forever home! We have down that he was born 7/3/18, so he’s now about 6.5 months old and this is a perfect time for you to bring him home!

This boy’s color is called mosaic, which is basically a white chinchilla with greyish markings. As you can see from his pictures, he’s white with silvery shading. Cute little guy!

This boy is nice and outgoing. He will come right up to the front of the cage to check out what’s going on and he would just love if you wanted to do playtime with him! Super super sweet boy. He has a bit of energy, but we’re sure a bigger cage and some exercise will help with that! And a new best friend (you) of course! He enjoys bouncing off the walls of the cage, though when he’s being held, he does calm down significantly. Not overly squirmy, can definitely be handled and petted. Curious and outgoing little guy. Doesn’t bite.

This chinchilla is currently caged by himself and we don’t know how he does with other chinchillas. If you are curious as to whether he might get along with your, or one of our, chinchillas, let us know and we’ll see what we can do.

This chinchilla would make a great “first chinchilla” for someone who’s never had chinchillas before.

The adoption fee for this mosaic male chinchilla is $200
